About the film collection:

Adult feature films are selected, as is everything else in the Library, according to favorable professional reviews. This is what differentiates our collection from commercial lenders like Blockbuster or Netflix. You can trust that a film on our shelves received critical praise. Conversely, there are popular movies that you will not find here because they were poorly reviewed.

Beyond a very good review, we collect films that are: classics; based on books; award-winning; important within a genre, the work of a particular director or significant in the history of film-making. We also consider the community's likely interest in a film and always, our monetary and profound space limitations. For all these reasons, we do not generally purchase TV series, made-for-TV movies, horror or NC-17 films.

You can request films through the online catalog or by calling the Reference Department at 781-721-7171 x20. New films (acquired during the past 12 months) can be reserved online by Winchester residents; non-Winchester residents should contact the Reference Department.

If you would like to suggest a film for purchase or comment on the film collection, you can contact the Reference staff or send an e-mail . Please be sure to include your name and email address; anonymous comments cannot be given the personal response we value.

The feature films are on the main floor, opposite the Circulation Desk. The VHS and DVDs are interfiled and in alphabetical order by title.

Most nonfiction videos (VHS) and DVDs are shelved on the upper floor. They are intershelved with the books by number according to the Dewey Decimal system.

About the music collection:

Adult music CD's are selected by reading professional music reviews and "best" lists, as well as by keeping up with bestsellers and music awards. Every attempt is made to cover all musical genres, proportional to popularity. With a limited budget and limited space, not all titles can be purchased, and timeliness must sometimes be sacrificed to a consideration of timelessness.

You can request music through the online catalog. You may also suggest music for purchase by sending an e-mail. Please include your name and e-mail address, so that we may respond.
