This celebration kicks off a three-year initiative by the
Library to reach out to the growing numbers of new international residents
in Winchester. In
cooperation with International Connections and funded by the John and Mary Murphy
Educational Foundation, the Library will provide a variety of
new materials and programs focused on helping these new residents get
acquainted with our town and find the support and information they need
as they adjust to and enrich their new home.
So mark your calendars for September
20 to “Celebrate! International Day
of Peace.”

New Pass: The Sports Museum
Don’t forget that, if you are a Winchester resident, you can reserve
passes for 14 area institutions. Our newest pass for The Sports Museum admits
six, with no additional charge. The Sports Museum, located at the
TD Banknorth Garden, showcases the distinctly rich sports heritage of New
England through an unparalleled collection of artifacts, multimedia, works
of art and interactive exhibits. (Because of events at the Garden, the Museum’s
hours vary. Check www.sportsmuseum.org for
details.) Stop by or call the Reference Desk at 781-721-7171 ext. 20 for
more information or to reserve a pass. The pass program is sponsored by
the Friends of the Library, with assistance from the EnKa Society and the
Winchester Rotary Club.
Library Re-design is in Progress
The collection has been moved …
As you may have noticed, we just completed a major shift of the collection.
Our goal was to make visiting the Library more pleasant and productive.
We think the final results will reflect the Library’s evolving role
as the place in the community to make connections – with information,
learning, art, literature, film, music, and each other.
If you are having trouble finding what you need, please don’t
hesitate to ask us for help. Here are some of the major changes:
Main Floor
- New fiction and new non-fiction are both on the main
floor.
- All suspense and mystery titles are shelved together
on the main floor.
- All paperbacks are on new display end-shelving in
the main aisle where browsing is easier.
- Large print books are now in the cozy alcove to the
left as you come in the Washington Street entrance.
- The art gallery at the front of the main floor will
become a small meeting room
- Reference has been opened up to accommodate more space
for patrons
Upper Floor
- All older fiction is on the upper floor to the right
as you go up the stairs (or to the left as you exit the elevator).
- All older non fiction is on the upper floor. 000 to
919 is to the left as you come up the stairs. 920 to Biography is to the
right at the top of the stairs.
- Young adult books and magazines are on the upper floor
where many teens gather in the afternoon and where more shelf space will
accommodate this growing collection
- The alcove room at the front of the upper floor better displays the
Library’s excellent collection of oversized books.
What remains to be done ...
- The smaller reference desk is being refinished and will be placed near
the windows
- New tables and chairs are on order for our public computer
stations and will accommodate more computers for the public
- The art gallery at the front of the main floor will
be enclosed with a glass wall and door and furnished as a small
meeting room
- New carpeting will be installed later this summer
Many people have contributed to this effort. Special thanks to all of those
who participated in our Strategic Planning Process, and provided the vision
that resulted in these changes. Thank you to our generous donors
for funding these improvements as well as the Trustees, Friends,
staff, and volunteers for all of their contributions. We are grateful
for Town funding for paint and carpet that was recommended by the Capital
Planning Committee and for the expertise of Town staff in guiding those
projects through to successful completion.
Public libraries are dynamic places. Thank you for your patience with us
as we make these changes and improve our ability to serve you better.
