We celebrate Native American Heritage Month in November because it is the traditional end of the year/harvest time and a time of thanksgiving for Native American/Indigneous tribes. This list of books by Native American authors attempts to raise our awareness and appreciation of the rich, diverse literary traditions of the Native American people. There are over 5 million people who identify as Native American and over 500 federally recognized tribes in the USA. The authors on this list represent the Kiowa, Muscogee, Ojibwe, Laguna, Spokane/Coeur D’Alene, Abenaki, Cherokee, Standing Rock Sioux, Chickasaw, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Each tribe has an oral tradition and its own culture that is played out in the pages of these literary works. Included on this list are works of fiction, a memoir, an anthology of poetry and of short stories. The unifying themes of this literature are the tradition of the storyteller, the connection between the land and the people, a hero’s journey and the supernatural/natural world. These books are available in ebook, digital audiobook, and hardcover formats.
